Hip

The external angle where two roof planes meet, sloping down from the ridge.

Definition

A hip is the external angle where two roof planes meet, sloping downward from the ridge to the eave. A hip roof has slopes on all four sides (rather than the gable ends of a simpler roof). Hip roofs are more stable in high winds than gable roofs but have more complex framing and more linear feet of ridge/hip cap to install. Hip cap material is essentially the same as ridge cap.
