Eave
The lower horizontal edge of a roof that overhangs the exterior wall.
Definition
The eave is the lower horizontal edge of a roof that overhangs the exterior wall. Eaves serve two main purposes: they direct water runoff away from the exterior walls, and they provide shade for the wall and windows below. Eaves typically have fascia (vertical trim) on the edge and soffit (horizontal underside) beneath. In cold climates, ice and water shield is required on the first 6 feet of the roof measured from the eave.
