Drip Edge

Definition

Drip edge is a metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof. Its job is to direct water running off the roof away from the fascia and into the gutter, preventing rot and water damage. Drip edge is typically required by building code in most US jurisdictions and is installed under the shingles at the eave and over the underlayment at the rake. It comes in various profiles (Type C, Type D, Type F) to match different roof configurations.
