Soffit

The horizontal underside of the roof overhang, between the fascia and the exterior wall.

Definition

The soffit is the horizontal underside of a roof overhang, between the fascia board and the exterior wall. Soffits serve two main purposes: they provide a finished appearance to the roof overhang, and they contain soffit vents that allow fresh air into the attic space. Proper soffit ventilation is critical for attic airflow — when combined with ridge vents, it prevents heat buildup, ice dams, and moisture damage. Soffits are typically made of wood, vinyl, or aluminum.
