Attic Ventilation

The system of intake and exhaust vents that circulate air through the attic space.

Definition

Attic ventilation is the system of intake vents (typically soffit vents) and exhaust vents (typically ridge vents) that circulate air through the attic space. Proper ventilation is critical for roof longevity. Benefits include preventing ice dams in winter, reducing heat buildup that damages shingles in summer, preventing moisture accumulation that leads to mold, and lowering energy costs. Building codes typically require 1 square foot of ventilation per 150 square feet of attic floor, split 50/50 between intake and exhaust.
