Tear-Off

The process of removing the existing roofing before installing new shingles.

Definition

A tear-off is the process of removing the existing roofing material (shingles, underlayment, flashings) before installing a new roof. A full tear-off exposes the roof deck, allows inspection and replacement of damaged deck, and is the preferred method for a long-lasting new roof. The alternative is a lay-over (installing new shingles over existing ones), which is faster and cheaper but usually prohibited by code after two layers and not recommended for quality installations.
