Roof Deck
The structural layer of plywood or OSB that shingles are installed on.
Definition
The roof deck is the structural base layer of a roof — the plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) sheathing that shingles and underlayment are installed on top of. Modern roofs typically use 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch thick plywood or OSB. When a roof is torn off for replacement, any rotten or damaged deck sheets must be replaced before the new roof is installed. Deck replacement is usually priced per sheet and is a common supplemental line item on insurance claims.
