Step Flashing

L-shaped metal flashing pieces installed where a roof meets a vertical wall.

Definition

Step flashing is a series of L-shaped metal flashing pieces installed where a roof plane meets a vertical wall, such as where a roof meets a dormer or chimney. Each piece overlaps the one below and interlocks with the shingle course, creating a stepped pattern that directs water away from the wall/roof junction. Proper step flashing is one of the most important details in leak prevention and is often the difference between a roof that lasts 30 years and one that leaks in year 5.
