3-Tab Shingle

The traditional single-layer asphalt shingle with three tabs per piece.

Definition

A 3-tab shingle is the traditional single-layer asphalt shingle, named for the three exposed tabs visible on each piece when installed. 3-tab shingles are the most affordable option but have a shorter lifespan (20-25 years typical) and a flatter appearance than architectural shingles. They are rarely used on new builds or high-end remodels today, but remain common on rental properties, budget installs, and insurance-driven repairs where matching existing shingles matters.
